Marblehead, MA

Marblehead owes its distinctiveness to geology and the sea. Our project juxtaposes stone and shorefront sites with plants long known to this land, making a new landscape meant to adapt and evolve with nature’s elements and cycles. Rock and stone, whether ancient outcropping or reshaped by human craft, structure plan and section alike into choreographed terraces that balance intimate spaces with sea views, from the pool at the property’s brow to the shorefront rain garden that filters storm runoff and inundations of seawater. Native grasses give way to mature specimen trees around a guest house pavilion, as stonework becomes more refined to match. Contemporary placemaking meets resiliency in a quintessentially New England coastal landscape.
